How it works

Please see my each way arbing guide for more information about each way bets and how they work.

bet365 will refund half of your qualifying each way bets up to a maximum total of £125.00. So, to claim the maximum £125.00 refund, you need to place each way bets totalling £250.00.

bet365 are paying 6 places as standard on the Grand National. If you lay your selection to place in the top 4, this also becomes an extra place offer, which I’ll cover in more detail shortly.

Qualifying bets

Option 1

You can place one each way bet totalling £250.00 or several smaller bets totalling £250.00. It’ll depend on your bankroll and how comfortable you feel with each approach.

The benefit of placing 1 x £125.00 each way bet on one horse is that the profit for hitting the extra places is pretty huge (£500+)! However, the downside is needing a considerable amount (£1,000+) in your exchange account to cover your whopping liability.

Option 2

My advice is to place your qualifying bets as 5 x £25 each way bets. Only one horse can win the race, so you only need funds in your exchange account to cover the horse with the largest ‘Win’ liability, plus your ‘Place’ liabilities. You stand more chance of hitting the extra place(s) with five horses selected, albeit for a smaller profit.

It’s entirely up to you which horses you go for, but selecting some of the shorter priced horses makes sense to help keep your outlay to a minimum.

The odds haven’t been great for bet365’s standard ‘6 Places’. With that in mind, it seems best to opt for ‘5 Places’ in the Each Way Extra market. You’ll only have one extra place (5th) to try and hit, but the better odds will enable you to lock in larger profits.

At the time of writing, Fiddlerontheroof is available at back odds of 19.00 (18/1). The ‘Win’ lay odds are 21.00, and the ‘Place’ lay odds are 5.80.

Either exchange works for this offer

Betfair and Smarkets are both great options for this offer. If you’ve not used one of them, now is a great time to give them a try.

  • Money back as cash up to £20
  • 0% commission for 60 days

Use the ‘Extra Place‘ setting on my Each Way Calculator to calculate your lay stakes.

Placing your each way bet

Bet365 logo

Place £25.00 ‘Each Way’ on Fiddlerontheroof @ 19.00 = Total stake of £50.00

You are placing a £25.00 each way bet on Fiddlerontheroof. That means you are betting £25.00 on Fiddlerontheroof to win at odds of 19.00. You are also betting £25.00 on Fiddlerontheroof to place in the top 5 at odds of 4.60.

If you’re not overly familiar with each way betting, the place odds of our each way bet can be worked out as follows…

19.00 (decimal odds) – 1.00 (stake) = 18.00
18.00 ÷ 5 (place terms) = 3.60
3.60 + 1.00 (stake) = 4.60 (place odds)

Please see my ‘Betting Odds Explained‘ page for more information about betting odds.

Laying the ‘win’ part of your each way bet

Now that we have broken our qualifying bet down into two separate bets, we can lay each part at the exchange.

As you can see from the calculator above, we need to lay £22.64 against Fiddlerontheroof to ‘Win‘…

Betfair logo

Lay £22.64 against Fiddlerontheroof to ‘Win’ @ 21.00 = Potential liability of £452.80

Laying the ‘place’ part of your each way bet

As you can see from the calculator above, we need to lay £19.90 against Fiddlerontheroof to ‘Place‘ in the top 4…

Betfair logo

Lay £19.90 against Fiddlerontheroof to ‘Place’ @ 5.80 = Potential liability of £95.52

The overall profit/loss figures are shown at the bottom of the Each Way Calculator above. We just need to add our £25.00 refund onto each total as follows…

So, as you can see, no matter the race’s outcome, you stand to make a minimum profit of around £16.00!

You’ve placed your bet365 qualifying bet on the ‘5 Places’ market. The ‘Place’ market at Betfair is for the first 4 places. Therefore, if Fiddlerontheroof finishes exactly 5th, you’ll win both the ‘place’ part of your bet365 each way bet and your ‘place’ lay bet at Betfair, giving you a profit of £131.68!

You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s an unlikely outcome, but we hit the extra place last year for a £233.74 overall profit!

I’ll update the following table as the race gets nearer with my selections…

It’s entirely up to you which horses you go for. Try and aim for a profit of £15.00+ on each of your five selections. The higher the odds, the larger your profit will be if you land the extra place.

If you don’t yet have a bet365 account, make sure you sign up soon, so you don’t miss out on any big offers in the future. The bet365 sign up offer is one of the best around (£50.00 in bet credits), and their free bet offers on some of the big football matches are hugely profitable.

* Fiddlerontheroof finished 5th, resulting in an overall profit of £201.07 on this bet365 offer. For anyone who went for 6 places, Longhouse Poet came in 6th. Congratulations to everyone who bagged a bumper profit with the extra place(s)! *
