The Cardinal Sin
-
Even though I know and preach it to others I just committed the cardinal sin and laid a 26/1 bet before backing it with the free €3 bet. I was looking to just take over €2 from this and ended up losing €72 as Dele Alli scored seconds after I placed it….
Just want to put my error story here because if it just stops 1 bettor from doing the same it’ll be worth it. Most of today’s profits spunked away on a schoolboy error…..

New to matched betting?
My Matched Betting Academy is the best place to get started. Learning the fundamentals takes 10-15 minutes and you’ll make £15 in the process.

Laid the draw to the liability of £450 in the Real Madrid match today when they were winning 1-0. Before I could get my bookie bet on they conceded a penalty.
Put the bookie bet on something else and
I spent the next hour or so praying for a goal so I could back out of the situation. Real got a free kick and scored from it. I did a little happy dance and waited for Smarkets to reopen the markets. As soon as it opened I banged my back bet on happy as I would now be getting a small profit rather than the risk of a large loss.Villa then scored pretty much straight away to make it 2-2 and I though “that was lucky I got the bet on in time” the match ended that way.
At the end of the match my smarkets was £450 less than it should have been. Sure enough when I looked the market was cancelled because of the goal while my bet was still pending, so even though it was matched it wasn’t.
A fortnight’s profit wiped out in one game because I put the lay on first! ..The moral of the story is put your bookie bet on first unless the liability of your lay is less than your backer stake, especially when in play and anything can happen!
I’m going to cry myself to sleep now, goodnight!
+0Oh sorry to read that, I will always think even more carefully now, especially with high odds!
I backed the draw first and then Real scored and the odds then went against me.
But doing this way I only made £2.50 instead of £7, not a loss, but still annoying. I think we just need to be mindful of what a goal will do to our betting position.SMarkets does not notify you when your bet is unmatched or cancelled, you always should refresh and check your bet history. I had the same issue when a goal occurs and the bets are all cancelled.
